Choose the right training course

5 steps to choosing the right training course for you

Booking yourself on to a course requires taking a leap. Making a decision, doing your research and then turning up. Making sure you choose the right course is essential to enjoying the trainer input and needless to say, getting the most from it.

So, why are you thinking about a training course and which one is right for you?

Do you want to further your career by extending your skill set or do you want to extend your skill set to further your career?

Here are 5 simple steps to help you choose the right course for you.

STEP 1 If you are already doing something you love then look for a course that offers the qualifications for natural progression in your current employment. It is advised that you choose a course relevant to your workplace unless you want to try something completely different just because it interests you.

STEP 2 – Speak to your colleagues and employer whom might be able to guide you towards the qualification that will help you with your career. How did they progress? Which courses have helped them? Speak to the person in the role you one day wish to have. They might be willing to share their steps to success, but then, they might not. You can only ask.

STEP 3 – Cost is quite a big factor in choosing a training course so definitely consider all of the options and ask questions of your provider to see which route is most cost effective. Some training providers provide packages to meet your training needs should you need more than one qualification. There might also be a scheme for funding that you don’t know about or you might think you need two courses when there is a cheaper single alternative. Ask for advice, understand what it is that they offer and then weigh up the cost benefit to you.

STEP 4 – Take your future plans in to consideration. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? What is your chosen path and at what level do you want to be employed? Look at the job description of that role; what qualifications or certification do you need? Find a course that works to help you reach that end goal and the desired salary too.

STEP 5 – Speak to your employer about time off for training, they might encourage it or subsidise some leave for it.
