What is covered in the NEBOSH General Certificate syllabus?

The NEBOSH General Certificate is divided into two separately assessed units: NG1 and NG2.

Unit GNC1 – Management of Health and Safety
This unit focuses on the principles of effective health and safety management and includes:

  • Element 1: Why we should manage workplace health and safety
  • Element 2: How health and safety management systems work and what they look like
  • Element 3: Managing risk – understanding people and processes
  • Element 4: Health and safety monitoring and measuring performance

Unit GNC2 – Risk Assessment
This unit focuses on the practical application of risk assessment and includes:

  • Element 5: Physical and psychological health
  • Element 6: Musculoskeletal health
  • Element 7: Chemical and biological agents
  • Element 8: General workplace issues
  • Element 9: Work equipment
  • Element 10: Fire

How is the NEBOSH General Certificate assessed?

To achieve the NEBOSH General Certificate, candidates must successfully complete and pass two separate assessments: GNC1 and GNC2.

Unit NG1 – Open Book Examination
NG1 is assessed via an online Open Book Examination (OBE), which tests a candidate’s ability to apply health and safety knowledge to realistic workplace scenarios. Further guidance on the open book examination format is available in the NEBOSH Learner Guide – OBE.

Unit GNC2 – Practical Risk Assessment
NG2 is assessed by completing a practical risk assessment based on the candidate’s own workplace. This must be submitted within 10 days of the GNC1 examination date.

To achieve the full NEBOSH General Certificate qualification, candidates must complete and pass both GNC1 and GNC2 within five years of initial registration.

How long does it take to complete the NEBOSH General Certificate?

The NEBOSH General Certificate is delivered over 10 classroom days, providing structured tutor-led learning.

Following the taught sessions, candidates are given 24 hours to complete and submit the GNC1 Open Book Examination. The practical GNC2 risk assessment is then completed in the candidate’s own workplace within the required submission timeframe.

The OBE will take around 8 hours to complete but you will have access to the portal for 24 hours to enable you to complete the NEBOSH Open Book Examination.

How much does the NEBOSH General Certificate cost?

The cost of the NEBOSH General Certificate is £1,650. Flexible payment options are available.

Important information for learners using ELC funding
ELC funding received for ELCAS-approved courses is inclusive of tuition, examination and certification fees, course materials, and VAT, in line with ELCAS and MOD regulations.

What funding is available for the NEBOSH National General Certificate (NGC)?

We offer several flexible options to help fund your NEBOSH NGC training:

ELCAS Funding (MOD / Military Leavers)

We are an approved ELCAS provider (Provider No. 8747), which means eligible service leavers can use Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) to fund up to 80% of the course cost.

Note: You must submit your claim via your Single Service Representative and receive approval before booking.

SLC Funding (Serving Personnel)

If you’re still serving, you may be able to claim Standard Learning Credits (SLC) toward the cost of the course. This is available for classroom or blended delivery.

Payment Plans

We offer flexible interest-free payment plans to help spread the cost. Just let us know at booking and we’ll arrange a monthly or split-payment option that suits you.

Corporate Funding

If your employer is funding the course, we can invoice your company directly. We work with a number of companies across construction, utilities, defence, and logistics.

Self-Funded Learners

What are the entry requirements for the NEBOSH National General Certificate (NGC)?

There are no formal entry requirements for the NEBOSH National General Certificate. However, learners should:

Have a suitable standard of English.
NEBOSH recommends an English language level equivalent to IELTS 6.0 or higher. This helps ensure learners can understand course materials and complete the assessments effectively.
