NEBOSH General Certificate Online Course Structure

The NEBOSH General Certificate eLearning is divided into two units, NG1 and NG2, which are assessed separately. Together, they provide a comprehensive foundation in occupational health and safety.

Unit NG1 – Management of Health and Safety
This unit focuses on why health and safety matters, how to manage it, and how to measure performance. It is made up of four elements:

  • Element 1: Why we should manage workplace health and safety
  • Element 2: How health and safety management systems work and what they look like
  • Element 3: Managing risk – understanding people and processes
  • Element 4: Health and safety monitoring and measuring performance

Unit NG2 – Risk Assessment
This unit is a practical application and covers a wide range of common workplace hazards. Learners complete a risk assessment as part of their assessment. NG2 includes seven elements:

  • Element 5: Physical and psychological health
  • Element 6: Musculoskeletal health
  • Element 7: Chemical and biological agents
  • Element 8: General workplace issues
  • Element 9: Work equipment
  • Element 10: Fire
  • Element 11: Electricity

To complete the NEBOSH General Certificate Online course, you must pass:

  • NG1: An online Open Book Exam (OBE)

  • NG2: A practical risk assessment completed at your workplace within 10 days of the exam

When you enrol on the NEBOSH General Certificate Online course with SWT, you’ll receive 12 months’ access to the platform and full tutor support. Most learners complete the course in 12 to 18 weeks on average.

The Open Book Exam (NG1) takes around 8 hours to complete, and you’ll have 24-hour access to the NEBOSH exam portal on the day of your assessment.

Exams must be booked and paid for separately.

Both assessments must be completed within five years of registration to gain the full NEBOSH qualification.
