What Is the Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) Scheme?
The Enhanced Learning Credits Scheme (ELC) is a funding initiative from the Ministry of Defence that financially supports service personnel in their personal and professional development. What Does ELCAS Cover?

Am I Eligible for ELCAS Funding?
To qualify for Enhanced Learning Credits, you need to:
Have completed at least 4 years of eligible service (you can claim £1,000)
OR 6 years or more for the higher tier of £2,000
Be registered with the ELCAS scheme and have an Individual Learning Account (ILA)
Submit an approved claim at least 25 working days before the course starts
If you’re unsure of your eligibility, your Single Service Representative (SSR) or education office can provide confirmation.
Using ELCAS Funding as a Service Leaver
You can claim up to:
Five years after leaving the forces (if you left after 1st April 2016)
Ten years if you left before 1st April 2016
Make sure to read the official JSP 822 guidance before submitting a claim. It’s also worth knowing:
✅ You can combine all three £1,000 claims if you’ve served between 6–8 years, giving you a larger funding pot
✅ Study must commence before your scheme expiry date
✅ You can only submit one claim per financial year (April–March)
✅ Medically discharged service leavers may be eligible for extended claims
Joint Funding Initiative (PF FE/HE Scheme)
If you’re leaving the service, you may be eligible for additional support through the Joint Funding Initiative (PF FE/HE Scheme). This could help you access even more training opportunities.
